What message will you leave for 2076?

As Carlton County joins the nation's 250th anniversary celebration, we're inviting residents to preserve the stories, memories, and everyday moments that define life in 2026. Together, we're creating a community time capsule to be opened in 2076.

History is made by ordinary people

Every contribution helps preserve a fuller picture of life in Carlton County in 2026. Together, we'll create a time capsule that reflects the many voices, experiences, and perspectives of our community.

No single contribution tells the whole story. Together, our memories, artifacts, letters, and perspectives create a richer picture of Carlton County in 2026 than any one voice could tell alone.

A Gift to the Future

Every contribution becomes part of a community time capsule that will remain sealed until 2076, when future generations will open it during the nation's 300th anniversary. By preserving today's voices, we're creating a gift from one generation to the next.

The stories we preserve today become the history future generations inherit.

A Community Effort

Messages to 2076 is made possible through the collaboration of local organizations, volunteers, artists, educators, and community members working together to preserve Carlton County's story for future generations.

About

Preserving Today's Stories for Tomorrow

Messages to 2076 is a community time capsule project inviting the people of Carlton County to preserve the stories, perspectives, and experiences that define life in 2026. Together, we're creating a collection that will remain sealed until the nation's 300th anniversary in 2076.

Why We're Doing This

The year 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone that invites communities across the nation to reflect on where we've been and where we're going. Here in Carlton County, this anniversary arrives during a time of remarkable change. Our communities are experiencing new beginnings, difficult conversations, and important milestones that will shape the future for decades to come. From changes in our schools and public lands to evolving industries, cultural initiatives, and community priorities, this moment in time deserves to be remembered through the voices of the people living it.Messages to 2076 was created to preserve those voices.Rather than documenting history after it has happened, this project invites people across Carlton County and the Fond du Lac Band to capture the present while we are living it. Every letter, artifact, photograph, story, and reflection becomes part of a community time capsule that will remain sealed until 2076, when future generations will open it during the nation's 300th anniversary.Fifty years from now, people won't just want to know what happened in 2026. They'll want to understand what it felt like to live here. What gave us hope. What challenged us. What brought our communities together. The story of Carlton County belongs to all of us, and together we're creating a gift that future generations can discover.

Our Vision

We envision a collection that reflects the full story of Carlton County in 2026, not through a single perspective, but through the many voices, experiences, and memories that make up our community. When the collection is opened in 2076, we hope future generations will discover more than historical facts. We hope they'll gain a deeper understanding of the people who lived here, the challenges we faced, the celebrations we shared, the hopes we carried, and the choices we made.Every contribution, whether simple or profound, becomes part of a larger story. Together, these voices will create a living portrait of Carlton County at a pivotal moment in its history. Our vision is that this collection will inspire curiosity, strengthen connections across generations, and remind those who come after us that history is built from the everyday lives of ordinary people.Whether you've lived here your whole life or just arrived, whether you're young or old, every perspective helps tell the story of Carlton County.

The most ordinary moments today become the most extraordinary discoveries tomorrow.

The selected artwork will be exhibited at the Carlton County Historical Society before becoming part of the Messages to 2076 time capsule.

A Living Exhibit

Messages to 2076 preserves our community's story in more than one way. It is also a living community exhibit that invites visitors to reflect on the defining stories, traditions, and changes shaping Carlton County in 2026.As part of the project, a local artist will create an original work inspired by the intersection of our region's deep-rooted traditions, Indigenous heritage, and the political, technological, environmental, and cultural changes unfolding during this historic year. The completed artwork will be displayed at the Carlton County Historical Society throughout the project, creating an opportunity for community members to experience and reflect on a shared interpretation of this moment in time. When the exhibition concludes, the artwork will join the community's letters, artifacts, and stories as part of the Messages to 2076 collection. Together, they will be carefully preserved until they are opened in 2076, offering future generations both a visual and personal connection to the people who called Carlton County home in 2026.

Questions for the Future

As you consider what to contribute, ask yourself:

  • What do you hope future generations will understand about life in Carlton County in 2026?

  • What changes are shaping our community today?

  • What traditions, places, or relationships do you hope endure?

  • What gives you hope for the people who will call this place home fifty years from now?

There are no right or wrong answers. Every perspective helps tell the story of our community.

We cannot choose what future generations will remember. We can choose what we leave behind.
