Preserving Today's Stories for Tomorrow
Carlton County Messages to 2076 is a community time capsule project inviting the people to preserve the stories, perspectives, and experiences that define life in 2026. Together, we're creating a collection that will remain sealed until the nation's 300th Anniversary in 2076.
Why We're Doing This
The year 2026 marks the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone that invites communities across the nation to reflect on where we've been and where we're going. Here in Carlton County, this anniversary arrives during a time of remarkable change.From changes in our schools and public lands to evolving industries, cultural initiatives, and community priorities, this moment deserves to be remembered through the voices of the people living it.Rather than documenting history after it has happened, Carlton County Messages to 2076 invites people across Carlton County and the Fond du Lac Band to capture the present while we're living it. Through letters, artifacts, photographs, and personal reflections, we're creating a lasting record of our community for future generations.Fifty years from now, people won't just want to know what happened in 2026. They'll want to understand what it felt like to live here: what gave us hope, what challenged us, and what brought our communities together.
Our Vision
We envision a collection that reflects the full story of Carlton County in 2026 through the many voices, experiences, and memories that make up our community.When future generations explore this collection, we hope they'll discover more than historical facts. We hope they'll gain a deeper understanding of the people who lived here, the challenges we faced, the celebrations we shared, and the hopes we carried for the future.Our vision is to create a collection that inspires curiosity, strengthens connections across generations, and reminds those who come after us that history is shaped not only by extraordinary events, but by the everyday lives of ordinary people.

The selected artwork will be exhibited at the Carlton County Historical Society before becoming part of the Messages to 2076 time capsule.
A Living Exhibit
Carlton County Messages to 2076 preserves our community's story in more than one way. It is also a living community exhibit that invites visitors to reflect on the defining stories, traditions, and changes shaping Carlton County in 2026.As part of the project, a local artist will create an original work inspired by the intersection of our region's deep-rooted traditions, Indigenous heritage, and the political, technological, environmental, and cultural changes unfolding during this historic year.The completed artwork will be displayed at the Carlton County Historical Society throughout the project, creating an opportunity for community members to experience and reflect on a shared interpretation of this moment in time.When the exhibition concludes, the artwork will join the community's letters, artifacts, and stories as part of the Carlton County Messages to 2076 collection. Together, they will preserve both a visual and personal record of Carlton County in 2026 for future generations.

Community Art Commission
(Coming Winter 2026)
This winter, we'll invite artists to submit proposals for a commissioned artwork inspired by the stories our community has shared throughout the project. A commissioned artist will create an original work inspired by the stories, letters, and artifacts collected through Messages to 2076. The Request for Proposals will be released in Winter 2026.
No single story can tell the story of a community.Yours helps complete the picture.
Submitting Your Contribution
Timeline
Contributions will be accepted from July through December 2026. Whether you participate early or near the end of the project, every submission helps create a lasting record of life in Carlton County.
Submission Locations
Physical artifacts and handwritten letters may be delivered to the Carlton County Historical Society or Pine Knot News during regular business hours. Letters and digital media may also be submitted through this website.
Preservation Options
You decide how your contribution will be preserved. Choose to have your letter or artifact displayed publicly when appropriate, placed directly into the collection, or, for letters, sealed until 2076. Your preferences will always be respected.

Whether you're sharing a family keepsake, a photograph, digital artwork, or another meaningful item, we'd love to consider it for the Carlton County Messages to 2076 collection. Physical artifacts may be delivered to the Carlton County Historical Society, while photographs, videos, audio recordings, digital artwork, scanned documents, and letters can be uploaded through our online submission form.
Our Commitment to Preservation
Every contribution is reviewed and cared for according to the Carlton County Historical Society's established collection policies. These guidelines help ensure the collection remains meaningful, well documented, and preserved for future generations.
Accepted contributions become part of the Carlton County Historical Society's permanent collection.
Ownership transfers to the Historical Society upon acceptance.
All submissions are reviewed according to the Collection Guidelines, and not every artifact can be accepted.
Acceptance is based on historical significance, condition, relevance to Carlton County, and the needs of the collection.
The Historical Society is not currently accepting long-term loans.

Letters should not include personal attacks, threats, harassment, discriminatory content directed at protected groups, or material whose primary purpose is to intimidate or demean others. Our goal is to preserve an honest and representative record of life in Carlton County while creating a collection that future generations can learn from, reflect upon, and appreciate.
